Lamb's Ear (Stachys byzantina)
A beloved perennial ground cover renowned for its incredibly soft, silvery-white foliage that feels exactly like a lamb's ear. This low-growing plant creates stunning textural contrast in gardens while serving as an excellent drought-tolerant ground cover or border edging.
Plant Characteristics:

Foliage: Thick, woolly, oval leaves covered in dense silvery hairs
Flowers: Purple flower spikes on tall stems in early summer (often removed to maintain foliage display)
Growth habit: Low, spreading perennial that forms dense mats
Texture: Exceptionally soft, velvety leaves beloved by children and gardeners alike

Growing Conditions:

USDA Hardiness Zones: 4-8
Sun exposure: Full sun to partial shade
Soil: Well-draining soil essential; thrives in poor, sandy, or rocky soils
Water needs: Drought tolerant once established; avoid overwatering
pH: Adaptable to most soil types; prefers neutral to slightly alkaline

Garden Uses:

Ground cover for sunny areas
Border edging and pathway plantings
Rock gardens and xeriscaping
Children's sensory gardens
Silver foliage contrast in perennial borders
Mediterranean and drought-tolerant landscapes

It can also add texture to an indoor garden with organic herbs, though it is grown for foliage, not as a medicinal herb. Its soft foliage can make thoughtful garden gifts for her or gardeners.

Notes:
Lamb's Ear spreads gradually through underground runners, creating attractive colonies without being invasive. The woolly foliage provides excellent contrast to green-leafed plants and remains attractive through most of the growing season.
