Yomogi (Artemisia princeps), Japanese mugwort, is a robust perennial herb native to East Asia, deeply woven into the culinary, medicinal, and cultural traditions of Japan, Korea, and China. Its deeply lobed, silvery-green leaves carry a distinctive earthy, herbal fragrance that is immediately recognizable to anyone familiar with traditional East Asian botanical practice or the iconic springtime flavor of mochi and traditional rice cakes.

Yomogi is an energetic, adaptable grower that thrives in full sun to partial shade and tolerates a range of soil conditions. It spreads readily via underground rhizomes and can become vigorous in favorable conditions — plant where spreading is welcome or contain with borders. Hardy in zones 5–9, it reliably returns each spring and can be harvested throughout the growing season. Young spring shoots are the most tender; mature leaves are best for drying and moxa preparation.

In Traditional Chinese and Japanese medicine, yomogi is the plant used to make moxa — the compressed herb burned in the practice of moxibustion, one of the foundational therapies of East Asian medicine. Beyond its medicinal significance, it holds a cherished place in Japanese cuisine and seasonal ritual, appearing in spring dishes, ceremonial foods, and traditional celebrations. The aromatic leaves contain volatile oils, flavonoids, and terpenes that have long attracted botanical research interest.

This plant is offered for cultivation and botanical study purposes and is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease. Always consult a qualified healthcare provider before medicinal use.
