St. John's Wort brings sunshine to the garden in more ways than one. The bright yellow flowers with their characteristic burst of stamens seem to hold light even on cloudy days, and if you hold a leaf up to sun, you'll see the tiny translucent dots — oil glands that early herbalists called "perforations," giving it the name Hypericum perforatum.
This hardy perennial prefers full sun and well-drained soil, growing 1-3 feet tall depending on conditions. It blooms prolifically in midsummer, right around the feast day of St. John (June 24), which is how it earned its common name. The plant can spread via underground runners, so give it room or be prepared to manage its enthusiasm.
Herbalists have traditionally valued St. John's Wort for supporting emotional balance and easing melancholy, working with the flowering tops harvested in full bloom. Oil infused with the fresh flowers turns deep red and is traditionally used topically. Midsummer traditions held that St. John's Wort gathered on St. John's Eve held the most potent medicine and strongest protective power. It was hung over doors, woven into wreaths, and valued as a plant that could chase away darkness — both literal and metaphorical. Modern herbalists still gather it in full bloom, timing harvest for peak medicinal properties.
