Yarrow (Achillea millefolium) in its classic white form is the original - the species plant from which centuries of herbal tradition spring, with flat-topped clusters of tiny white flowers above feathery, finely divided grey-green foliage with the sharp, medicinal fragrance that is unmistakably yarrow. It blooms from early summer well into fall, self-seeds modestly, and attracts a remarkable diversity of beneficial insects. Among the most useful and historically significant plants a person can grow.

Growing Information
Yarrow thrives in full sun and well-drained to dry, lean soil. It is one of the most drought-tolerant medicinal perennials available, adapted to poor, rocky, and disturbed ground across the northern hemisphere. Rich, moist soil produces floppy growth and reduces the concentration of aromatic compounds. Plants reach 2-3 feet tall and spread by rhizome over time. Deadhead to extend bloom or leave seed heads for natural spread. Divide clumps every 2-3 years to maintain vigor. Hardy and long-lived throughout most of North America.

Traditional Use
Yarrow is among the most universally used medicinal plants in recorded human history - archaeological evidence suggests human use dating back at least 60,000 years. Named for the legendary Achilles who is said to have used it on the battlefield, yarrow appears in the traditional medicine of virtually every culture in the northern hemisphere. European, Asian, and Native American herbal traditions all include it as a significant medicinal plant. The flowering aerial parts are harvested at peak bloom. White yarrow is considered by many herbalists to carry the most potent medicinal character of the species.

Care on Arrival
Water upon arrival and allow to settle in a bright location before transplanting. Yarrow is one of the most adaptable medicinal herbs available - tough, resilient, and forgiving of imperfect conditions. Transplant into well-drained soil after your last frost date. Avoid overwatering; yarrow handles drought far better than wet feet. Expect flowers in the first season if planted in spring. A plant that will reward you for decades with minimal attention.

White Yarrow is the classic species, and pairs beautifully with Gold Yarrow and Rubra Yarrow for a complete yarrow collection spanning the color spectrum. Echinacea and Boneset complement it in a traditional American folk herb collection. For a complete medicinal perennial border, add Goldenrod, Wild Bergamot, and St. John's Wort.

Plant Care Guide

Simple guidance to help your plant thrive.

Full Sun

Yarrow thrives in full sun and handles Missouri summers well. Give it water during extended droughts but otherwise it largely takes care of itself.

  • Full sun preferred
  • Handles heat well
  • Water during extended drought
  • Very easy to grow

Low — Drought Tolerant

Yarrow absolutely hates wet feet. It is drought tolerant once established and prefers to dry out between waterings.

  • Drought tolerant once established
  • Hates wet feet
  • Let soil dry between waterings
  • Do not overwater

Well-Drained, Average to Poor Soil

Yarrow actually does better in average to lean soil. Rich, wet soil causes floppy growth. Good drainage is the most important factor.

  • Average to lean soil preferred
  • Excellent drainage essential
  • Will flop in rich wet soil
  • Grows well in gravel or rocky areas

Why Gardeners Love This Plant

Carried into Battle

Yarrow's Latin name references Achilles, who reportedly used it to treat his soldiers' wounds. It has a long traditional use for staunching bleeding — also known as Woundwort.

Cold and Fever Ally

One of the top herbs for colds and fevers. A mildly bitter herb that pairs well with mint to become a more drinkable tea. Both leaves and flowers are medicinal.

Pollinators Love It

Yarrow is a pollinator magnet. We consistently find baby rabbits sheltering in our yarrow patch too — its ferny foliage makes excellent ground cover for small creatures.

We Also Offer Rubra

Our Arubra (red) yarrow starts as deep red and fades to coral — beautiful in both garden and tea. Medicinally interchangeable with white yarrow.

Growing Tips & Common Questions

Everything you need to help your plant settle in and thrive.

Both are used and the debate continues among herbalists. We use both — cutting leaves and flowers together during the growing season covers all your bases.

Yarrow spreads gradually but is not aggressively invasive like mugwort or nettles. It is very easy to keep under control.

Yarrow has a mildly bitter flavor on its own. Mix it with a bit of peppermint to make it more pleasant. Use leaves and flowers — steep for 10-15 minutes covered to retain the volatile oils.

Harvest leaves throughout the growing season. Harvest flowers when they are freshly open. Yarrow dries easily hung upside down in bundles.
