Sweet Annie (Artemisia annua) is perhaps the most sweetly fragrant of all the Artemisias - a tall, feathery annual with finely divided bright green foliage that carries an intensely sweet, warm, almost balsamic fragrance that fills the garden on warm afternoons and dries beautifully, holding its scent for months or even years. Cut branches hung to dry become prized material for wreaths, dried arrangements, and sachets. It is simultaneously one of the most decorative and most medicinally significant annual herbs available.

Growing Information
Sweet Annie thrives in full sun and well-drained, average to lean soil. A vigorous annual, it grows quickly to 4-6 feet tall, self-seeds prolifically, and can become weedy in favorable conditions - deadhead if you want to control spread, or welcome the volunteers. The foliage is most fragrant and useful harvested in late summer just before flowering. Hang cut branches upside down in a dry, ventilated space to preserve the extraordinary fragrance. An excellent back-of-border plant that earns its space through sheer aromatic generosity.

Traditional Use
Sweet Annie has one of the most remarkable stories in botanical medicine. Artemisia annua has been used in Traditional Chinese Medicine for over two thousand years, described in ancient texts for the treatment of fever. In the 1970s, Chinese researcher Tu Youyou isolated artemisinin from this plant, leading to the development of artemisinin-based antimalarial treatments - work for which she received the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 2015. Herbalists have traditionally valued the aromatic aerial parts of Sweet Annie, and contemporary research into the plant's compounds continues actively.

Care on Arrival
Water upon arrival and settle in a sunny location. Sweet Annie establishes readily and grows quickly. Plant after your last frost date in well-drained soil in the sunniest spot available. Water during establishment, then reduce frequency - this plant is adaptable and somewhat drought-tolerant once established. Plan for its height; give it the back of the border or a dedicated spot. Harvest entire branches in late summer before the small yellow flowers fully open for the most fragrant dried material.

Sweet Annie belongs to the Artemisia genus alongside Mugwort and Sagebrush, and growing all three reveals the remarkable aromatic range of this genus. Chinese Lantern makes a beautiful companion for dried arrangements. For other plants with extraordinary research histories alongside long folk traditions, explore Echinacea and Elderberry.
