Strawberry Mint (Mentha × smithiana) is a specialty mint variety that lives up to its whimsical name - the fragrance genuinely suggests fresh strawberries layered over cool mint, making it one of the most delightful aromatic herbs in the specialty mint collection. The leaves are soft, slightly rounded, and richly fragrant. It grows with the characteristic vigor of the mint family and rewards frequent harvesting.
Growing Information
Strawberry Mint prefers full sun to partial shade and moist, fertile soil. As with all mints, it spreads by underground runners and is best contained in a pot or with a root barrier when planted in the ground. Plants reach 12-18 inches tall. Trim back regularly to maintain compact, productive growth and harvest before the plant flowers for the best fragrance. Hardy in most zones; dies back in winter and re-emerges reliably in spring.
Traditional Use
Members of the mint family have been valued across virtually every herbal tradition worldwide, used in teas, culinary preparations, and aromatic applications for thousands of years. Specialty mints like Strawberry Mint are prized primarily for their unique fragrance profiles in herbal teas, culinary use, and aromatic crafting. The mint family's long tradition of use in folk herbalism spans cultures and centuries.
Care on Arrival
Water immediately upon arrival and keep consistently moist - mints suffer in dry conditions, especially after shipping. Allow to settle in a bright, sheltered spot for a day before placing in direct sun. Transplant into moist soil or a well-draining container after your last frost date. Pinch the growing tips early to encourage full, bushy growth. Harvest regularly to keep the plant producing through the season.
