Betony is a European perennial herb with distinctive magenta-purple flower spikes and a rich history in traditional gardens. Betony forms neat clumps of textured foliage topped with vibrant blooms that attract pollinators throughout the summer months.
Plant Characteristics:
Height: 12-24 inches tall with a 12-15 inch spread
Foliage: Heart-shaped, deeply veined leaves with scalloped edges forming basal rosettes
Flowers: Dense, cylindrical spikes of tubular magenta-purple flowers bloom from June through August
Growth habit: Clumping perennial that slowly spreads to form colonies
Stem: Square stems typical of the mint family
Growing Conditions:
USDA Hardiness Zones: 4-8
Sun exposure: Partial shade to full shade (tolerates morning sun)
Soil: Moist, well-draining, humus-rich soil; thrives in woodland conditions
Water needs: Consistent moisture preferred; does not tolerate drought well
pH: Slightly acidic to neutral soils
Garden Uses:
Woodland gardens and shaded borders
Traditional herb gardens
Cottage garden plantings
Native European plant collections
Pollinator gardens in shaded areas
Ground cover in moist, shaded locations
Notes:
Betony has been cultivated since medieval times and was once considered one of the most important herbs in European gardens. The plant self-seeds modestly and forms attractive, long-lived clumps. Flowers are excellent for cutting and the distinctive blooms add vertical interest to shade gardens.
For an organic garden, this potted perennial adds purple flowers to a pollinator garden and may draw a butterfly. Consider it for garden gifts for her.
This plant is sold for garden use, not as a medicinal product to heal illness.
