Barbat Skullcap (Scutellaria barbata) is a delicate, low-growing annual herb from East Asia with small, two-lipped flowers in shades of white to pale lavender. It is botanically related to the American Skullcap (Scutellaria lateriflora) but has its own distinct identity and tradition. The plant is compact and refined in habit, reaching only 8-16 inches tall, with slender stems and small, toothed leaves.
Growing Information
Barbat Skullcap prefers full sun to partial shade and consistently moist, well-drained soil. It performs best in cooler conditions and may struggle in intense summer heat without some afternoon shade. As an annual, it completes its life cycle in one season - allow it to set seed for natural reseeding the following year. Water consistently and do not allow to dry out completely. An unusual and rewarding plant for the dedicated herb gardener.
Traditional Use
Scutellaria barbata has a long and significant history in Traditional Chinese Medicine, where it has been used for centuries as an important botanical in the classical Chinese herbal pharmacopoeia. It is among the most studied of the Chinese medicinal herbs in contemporary research. Herbalists working within East Asian herbal traditions have valued this plant for its distinctive properties and long documented history of use.
Care on Arrival
Water gently upon arrival and keep consistently moist. Settle in a bright, sheltered location for a day before placing in full sun. Transplant after your last frost date into moist, enriched soil. In hot climates, afternoon shade will help the plant thrive through summer. Water regularly - this plant does not tolerate drought. A container with consistent moisture management works well for Barbat Skullcap.
