Sagebrush (Artemisia tridentata) carries the scent of the American West in its silver-grey foliage - that clean, sharp, resinous fragrance that rises from vast stretches of western rangeland after rain is entirely due to this plant. Grow it in Missouri and you bring a piece of that landscape into your garden. The foliage is small, wedge-shaped, and persistently silver-grey, giving the plant a distinctive sculptural quality that catches light beautifully. It is an unusual and deeply significant plant in both ecological and cultural terms.

Growing Information
Sagebrush demands full sun and excellent drainage - it is native to the dry, rocky basins and slopes of the American West and suffers in wet, humid conditions. Sandy or gravelly, lean soil is ideal; heavy clay or consistently moist soil will cause decline. Plants grow slowly, eventually reaching 3-6 feet tall and wide as a woody shrub. Exceptionally drought-tolerant once established. In Missouri's more humid climate, the best-drained, sunniest spot available - raised beds or south-facing slopes - gives the best results.

Traditional Use
Sagebrush is one of the most sacred and widely used plants in the ceremonial and medicinal traditions of the indigenous peoples of the American West. Many nations including the Navajo, Shoshone, Paiute, and numerous others have used it extensively in ceremony, as smudge, and in traditional medicine. The aromatic compounds in sagebrush - particularly camphor and artemisia ketones - give it a distinctive character that herbalists have recognized for both aromatic and topical applications. It holds a place of deep cultural significance that extends far beyond its practical uses.

Care on Arrival
Water gently upon arrival and settle in the sunniest, most well-drained location available. Sagebrush is challenging to grow well in Missouri's more humid climate but rewarding for those who provide the right conditions. Plant after your last frost date in gritty, lean, well-drained soil. Avoid any soil amendments that increase moisture retention. Water sparingly during establishment and hardly at all once the plant is growing actively. Excellent drainage is non-negotiable - this plant will not tolerate wet roots under any circumstances.

You Might Also Like
Sagebrush pairs naturally with other aromatic silver-leaved plants. Mugwort and Sweet Annie are relatives in the Artemisia genus with their own distinct traditions. Lamb's Ear and Silver Thyme share the silver foliage character. For a collection of plants with deep Native American ceremonial and medicinal significance, add Wild Bergamot, Boneset, and Echinacea.
