Rubra Yarrow (Achillea millefolium 'Rubra') brings deep rose-red color to the classic yarrow form - feathery, finely divided foliage and flat-topped flower clusters that bloom prolifically from early summer well into fall. The fragrance is the sharp, medicinal character common to all yarrows, distinctive and unmistakably herbal. Cut flowers dry beautifully and hold their color, making this variety as useful as it is ornamental.

Growing Information
Rubra Yarrow thrives in full sun and well-drained to dry soil. It is exceptionally drought-tolerant once established and actually prefers leaner soils - rich, moist conditions lead to floppy growth. Plants reach 2-3 feet tall and spread by rhizome over time, forming robust colonies. Deadhead spent flowers to extend the bloom season. Divide clumps every 2-3 years to maintain vigor. Hardy throughout most of North America.

Traditional Use
Yarrow is one of the most universally used medicinal plants in the world, with documented use spanning thousands of years across European, Asian, and Native American herbal traditions. Named for the legendary Achilles who is said to have used it on the battlefield, yarrow has been traditionally valued by herbalists across virtually every culture that encountered it. The flowering aerial parts are typically harvested at peak bloom.

Care on Arrival
Water upon arrival and allow to settle for a day in a bright location before full sun exposure. Yarrow is tough and adapts readily, but a brief transition helps after shipping. Transplant into well-drained soil after your last frost date. Avoid over-watering - yarrow is far more tolerant of drought than of wet roots. Expect blooms in the first season if planted in spring.

You Might Also Like
Pair Rubra Yarrow with Gold Yarrow for contrasting warm colors in the same traditional plant. Echinacea blooms at the same time and shares yarrow's sun and drought tolerance. For a complete medicinal perennial border, add Boneset and Goldenrod for late-season interest.
