Patchouli (Pogostemon cablin) is the iconic aromatic herb of the mint family whose deep, earthy, balsamic fragrance is one of the most recognizable scents in the world - warm, rich, slightly sweet, and distinctively grounding in a way that is hard to describe without experiencing. The leaves are broad, soft, and slightly hairy; the plant forms a bushy mound that becomes increasingly fragrant as it matures. It is a tropical herb that rewards those willing to manage its cold sensitivity with an aromatic experience unlike anything else in the garden.
Growing Information
Patchouli is a tender tropical perennial, native to tropical Asia and hardy only in zones 10-11. In Missouri it is grown as an annual or overwintered indoors as a houseplant. It demands full sun, well-drained fertile soil, and warm temperatures - do not transplant until nighttime temperatures are reliably above 60 degrees F. Plants can reach 2-3 feet tall in a season in good conditions. The fragrance intensifies as the plant matures and is strongest in older leaves. Take cuttings in fall to overwinter on a bright, warm windowsill.
Traditional Use
Patchouli has been used in traditional medicine and perfumery across South and Southeast Asia for centuries. In Ayurvedic medicine it has been valued as an aromatic herb with cooling and grounding properties. In Chinese traditional medicine it is known as Guang Huo Xiang and has been used to address digestive complaints in the folk tradition. The essential oil distilled from patchouli leaves became one of the most important fragrance ingredients in Western perfumery and remained associated with the counterculture of the 1960s and 70s. Herbalists value the dried leaves for sachets, aromatic preparations, and traditional topical applications.
Care on Arrival
Water upon arrival and keep in a warm, sunny indoor location until outdoor temperatures are consistently warm. Patchouli is very cold sensitive - a single frost will kill it. Plant after your last frost date in enriched, well-drained soil in the warmest, most sheltered spot available. Water consistently but ensure good drainage. Pinch back growing tips to encourage bushy growth. Harvest lower, older leaves throughout the season as these are most fragrant. Take cuttings in late summer before bringing indoors for winter.
