Comfrey plant (Symphytum officinale)
Comfrey is a hardy perennial herb in the borage family, valued for its lush foliage and striking clusters of bell-shaped flowers. Its leaves jare large, slightly fuzzy, and deep green, creating a dense and attractive clump in the garden. Comfrey typically produces purple flowers from late spring into summer, which are highly attractive to pollinators such as bees. We use organic potting mix for all plants we ship.
Comfrey is a great gift for gardeners.
Growing Conditions
Zones: Thrives in USDA zones 4, 9.
Soil: Prefers rich, well-draining soil but tolerates a wide range of conditions. It grows especially well in moist, fertile ground.
Light: Grows in full sun to partial shade. In hotter regions, partial shade can help prevent leaf scorch.
Water: Moderate water needs. Once established, comfrey is quite resilient but will flourish with regular watering.
Spacing: Plant 2, 3 feet apart, as comfrey grows large and spreads quickly.
Growth Habits
Comfrey grows vigorously and can reach 2, 4 feet tall with an equally wide spread. It develops a deep taproot, which makes it very hardy and long-lived. Because of its growth rate and ability to thrive in less-than-ideal soils, comfrey is often used as a companion plant and for soil enrichment in permaculture.
🌿 Many customers pair this plant with other traditional medicinal and pollinator-friendly perennials from our nursery, including:
* Feverfew (Tanacetum parthenium)
* Wild Bergamot / Bee Balm (Monarda fistulosa)
* Scarlet Bee Balm (Monarda didyma)
* Yarrow (Achillea millefolium)
* Chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla)
