Lamb's Ear (Stachys byzantina) is named with perfect accuracy - the leaves are large, thick, and covered in the densest, softest silver-white wool imaginable, genuinely resembling the ear of a lamb to the touch. It forms a spreading mat of this extraordinary foliage that glows in the garden, particularly at dusk and in moonlight, and sends up tall woolly flower spikes in early summer. Children and adults alike cannot pass it without stopping to touch. Beyond its ornamental appeal, it has a quiet but real place in folk herbal tradition.

Growing Information
Lamb's Ear thrives in full sun and excellent drainage - wet conditions cause the woolly foliage to rot. Sandy or gravelly soil is ideal. Plants spread by runners to form a dense, weed-suppressing mat, making excellent groundcover in sunny, dry areas. Remove flower spikes if you prefer a tidy, low foliage planting, or allow them to develop for their own architectural interest. Hardy throughout most of North America. Division every few years keeps the center of clumps vigorous.

Traditional Use
Lamb's Ear has a modest but genuine place in folk herbal tradition. The large, absorbent, naturally antiseptic leaves have been used as wound dressings and natural bandaging material across many folk traditions - the woolly texture and the plant's traditional properties made it a practical first-aid herb in the garden and field. Related species, particularly Stachys betonica (Betony), hold much more prominent positions in the European herbal canon, and the genus as a whole has been valued by herbalists across cultures.

Care on Arrival
Water gently upon arrival and settle in a sunny, well-drained location. Lamb's Ear ships well and establishes readily. Plant after your last frost date in the best-drained spot available. Avoid planting in low spots or heavy clay where water collects - wet conditions are the primary threat. Once established it is exceptionally drought-tolerant and nearly self-sufficient. Remove dead or rotting leaves from the center of clumps in spring to maintain healthy, vigorous growth.

You Might Also Like
Lamb's Ear pairs beautifully as a foliage plant with purple-flowered medicinal herbs. Catmint, Hyssop, and English Lavender create a stunning silver-and-purple combination. Betony is a medicinal relative with a much deeper folk herbal tradition. For a complete aromatic silver-foliage garden, add Silver Thyme and Sagebrush.
