Joe Pye Weed (Eutrochium purpureum) is a stately North American native perennial that commands attention in any naturalistic garden. Rising four to seven feet tall in full growth, its deep green foliage and large, domed clusters of rosy-purple flowers create a dramatic late-summer spectacle that is irresistible to monarch butterflies, swallowtails, and an array of native bees.
Joe Pye Weed thrives in moist, rich soil and tolerates partial shade, making it an excellent choice for rain gardens, woodland edges, and naturalizing areas where few other tall perennials perform as well. Plant in full sun for maximum flowering and the most robust growth. This plant is low-maintenance once established, reliably returns each spring, and is deer-resistant. A superb choice for supporting native pollinators and adding bold structure to the landscape.
A true North American botanical heritage plant, Joe Pye Weed takes its common name from a Native American healer who reportedly used it in early colonial times. Indigenous peoples across the eastern woodlands used various parts of the plant traditionally, and the roots and aerial parts were later incorporated into Eclectic medical practice in the 19th century. It was particularly associated with supporting kidney and urinary health in traditional use.
This plant is offered for cultivation and botanical study purposes and is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease. Always consult a qualified healthcare provider before medicinal use.
