Evening primrose opens its pale yellow flowers at dusk, sometimes so suddenly you can watch petals unfold. The flowers are short-lived — lasting only until the next morning — but produced prolifically throughout summer. This night-blooming habit attracts evening pollinators like moths, giving the plant a subtle magic that day-blooming flowers lack.
A biennial or short-lived perennial, evening primrose forms a rosette of leaves the first year and sends up flowering stalks the second. It self-seeds readily if happy, creating an ongoing presence. Full sun and decent drainage are all it asks — this is a prairie native that tolerates heat and drought. Plants can reach 3-5 feet when flowering.
Herbalists particularly value the oil from evening primrose seeds for its high GLA (gamma-linolenic acid) content. Native American tribes used evening primrose extensively, and the roots are edible and were once cultivated in Europe as a vegetable. Modern herbalists work with the seed oil for skin health and hormonal balance. The plant's association with evening and night gave it folkloric connections to the moon and feminine mysteries — a plant of transitions and thresholds.
