English Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) is perhaps the most beloved aromatic herb in cultivation - the silver-grey foliage, the upright purple flower spikes rising above it in midsummer, and above all the fragrance: clean, sweet, floral, instantly recognizable, and deeply calming in a way that seems almost chemical in its effectiveness. It is a plant that has been at the center of European herbal and aromatic tradition for thousands of years and shows no sign of diminishing in significance. Growing your own lavender is growing a direct connection to that long history.

Growing Information
English Lavender demands full sun and excellent drainage - it is native to dry Mediterranean hillsides and suffers in wet, heavy conditions. Sandy or gravelly soil is ideal. Plants reach 18-24 inches tall and wide, forming neat rounded mounds that are attractive in every season. Trim back by one-third after flowering to maintain compact shape and prevent woody legginess. Hardy in zones 5-8; may not survive harsh Missouri winters without protection or a very well-drained site. Excellent in containers and raised beds.

Traditional Use
Lavender has been continuously cultivated and used in European medicine, perfumery, and domestic life for over two thousand years. It appears in ancient Roman records, medieval monastery gardens, and the folk traditions of virtually every European culture. Herbalists have traditionally valued the flowers harvested at peak bloom for use in teas, tinctures, aromatic preparations, and sachets. The essential oil distilled from lavender flowers became one of the foundations of European perfumery and aromatherapy. Few plants have had as sustained and universal an appeal in Western culture.

Care on Arrival
Water gently upon arrival and settle in a sunny, well-drained spot. Lavender ships well but appreciates a brief transition period. Transplant into well-drained, lean soil after your last frost date - do not amend with rich compost, which encourages soft growth prone to disease. Do not bury the crown deeply. Excellent drainage is non-negotiable. In Missouri's clay-heavy soils, raised beds or containers with gritty mix give the best results. Once established, water sparingly.
