Elecampane (Inula helenium) is one of the most dramatic plants in the medicinal herb garden - a bold, architectural perennial with enormous basal leaves reaching 2 feet long, tall branching stems rising 4-6 feet, and bright yellow daisy-like flowers in midsummer. The root, which is the part most valued by herbalists, is massive and deeply fragrant - when dried, it smells of violets and warm earth. It is a plant with genuine presence in the landscape and a place in the herbal tradition stretching back to ancient Greece.

Growing Information
Elecampane thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers deep, moist, fertile soil - the large root system needs depth and nutrition to develop fully. Plants reach 4-6 feet tall in flower and spread slowly by root over time. Hardy throughout most of North America. The root is harvested in fall of the second or subsequent years, when the inulin content is highest and the fragrance most developed. Leave some root in the ground after harvest to maintain the plant's presence. A long-lived perennial that improves with age.

Traditional Use
Elecampane holds a distinguished place in the European herbal tradition going back to ancient Greece - the Latin name references the legend that the plant sprang from the tears of Helen of Troy. It appears in ancient Roman records, medieval monastery gardens, and virtually every major European herbal through the nineteenth century. Herbalists have traditionally valued elecampane root as a warming, aromatic respiratory and digestive herb with a specific affinity for the lungs in folk tradition. The root contains inulin, a prebiotic fiber, and volatile oils including azulene that give it its distinctive violet-like fragrance.

Care on Arrival
Water well upon arrival and keep moist. Elecampane establishes readily but benefits from consistent moisture in its first season. Plant after your last frost date in deep, enriched soil - loosen the soil to at least 12 inches depth to allow the taproot to develop freely. Choose a permanent location; established plants do not transplant well. Mulch generously to retain moisture and moderate soil temperature. Water consistently through the first season. The plant is modest in year one and increasingly impressive in subsequent years.

You Might Also Like
Elecampane is a foundational respiratory herb and pairs naturally with Mullein, Horehound, and Hyssop in a traditional respiratory herb collection. Marshmallow shares its deep root habit and traditional mucilaginous respiratory role. For other bold, architectural medicinal perennials, add Angelica and Comfrey.
