Crazy Daisy is a double-flowered Shasta Daisy (Leucanthemum x superbum) with cheerful, fully doubled white flower heads that look like oversized pompoms - layers upon layers of white ray petals surrounding a bright yellow center, produced in abundance from early summer well into fall. It is an exuberant, cottage-garden plant that cuts beautifully and brightens any space it inhabits. Sturdy, long-blooming, and genuinely happy-looking, it earns its name.
Growing Information
Crazy Daisy thrives in full sun and well-drained, moderately fertile soil. It tolerates a range of soil conditions but performs best with good drainage. Plants reach 18-24 inches tall and form clumping mounds that expand slowly over time. Deadhead spent flowers regularly to extend the bloom season significantly. Divide clumps every 2-3 years to maintain vigor and flower quality. Hardy throughout most of North America; a reliable, long-lived perennial with proper siting.
Traditional Use
Shasta Daisies are a modern hybrid developed in the late nineteenth century by Luther Burbank, crossing several wild daisy species. While the Shasta Daisy itself does not have a long folk herbal tradition, its parent species - including the European Ox-eye Daisy (Leucanthemum vulgare) - have been used in European folk medicine for centuries. The Ox-eye Daisy was traditionally valued by herbalists as a gentle herb, and some of that traditional character extends into the broader daisy family.
Care on Arrival
Water upon arrival and settle in a sunny location for a day before transplanting. Crazy Daisy is adaptable and establishes readily. Transplant after your last frost date into well-drained soil. Water during establishment, then reduce frequency - established plants are reasonably drought-tolerant. Deadheading is the single most important maintenance task for continuous blooming. Expect flowers in the first season if planted in spring.
