Chocolate Mint (Mentha × piperita 'Chocolate') is one of the most distinctive members of the mint family - its fragrance genuinely evokes the cool, rich combination of dark chocolate and peppermint, making it a standout in both the aromatic garden and the kitchen. The leaves are deep green with reddish-brown stems that deepen in color as the plant matures. Grow it near a path where you'll brush it in passing.
Growing Information
Chocolate Mint thrives in full sun to partial shade with consistently moist, fertile soil. Like all mints it spreads vigorously by underground rhizomes - container growing or root barriers are recommended to keep it in bounds. Plants reach 12-24 inches tall and produce small lavender flower spikes in mid to late summer. Cut back after flowering to maintain fresh foliage. Hardy and reliable; returns each spring from established roots.
Traditional Use
Peppermint and its relatives have been among the most widely used aromatic herbs throughout history, appearing in traditional herbal practices across Europe, Asia, and the Americas. Mints have been historically valued for their aromatic qualities in teas, culinary applications, and folk preparations. Chocolate Mint's rich fragrance makes it a particularly beloved variety for herbal teas and culinary use.
Care on Arrival
Keep moist upon arrival - mints are sensitive to drought stress during shipping. Water well and settle in a bright, sheltered spot for a day before moving to full sun. Transplant into moist, rich soil or a container after your last frost date. Pinch back growing tips to encourage bushy growth. Harvest frequently through the season to keep the plant producing fresh, fragrant leaves.
