Boneset (Eupatorium perfoliatum) is one of the most distinctly American medicinal plants - a robust, upright native perennial whose pairs of lance-shaped leaves appear to be pierced by the stem, a distinctive feature that gives the plant both its botanical character and one explanation for its common name. Flat-topped clusters of fuzzy white flowers bloom in late summer, attracting clouds of native bees and butterflies. It is a plant of genuine presence and one of the most historically significant herbs in American folk medicine.

Growing Information
Boneset thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers moist, fertile soil - it is native to wet meadows, stream banks, and moist woodland edges across eastern North America. Unlike many medicinal herbs, it actually tolerates and appreciates consistently moist conditions. Plants reach 3-5 feet tall and form slowly expanding clumps over time. Cut back after flowering or leave standing through winter for birds. Hardy throughout most of North America. An excellent choice for rain gardens and moist spots in the landscape.

Traditional Use
Boneset occupies a unique place in American herbal history - it was one of the most widely used medicinal plants in nineteenth century America, employed by both Native American peoples and European settlers, and was included in the U.S. Pharmacopoeia from 1820 to 1916. Many Native American nations of the eastern woodlands used boneset extensively, and Eclectic physicians of the nineteenth century considered it one of their most important botanicals. The aerial parts are harvested at peak flowering. Its common name is variously attributed to its use during the flu epidemic of 1918 and to the folk belief that it could aid in healing broken bones.

Care on Arrival
Water well upon arrival and keep consistently moist - boneset does not like to dry out. Settle in a bright location for a day before transplanting. Plant after your last frost date in the moistest spot available in your garden. Mulch generously to retain soil moisture. Water consistently through the first season. First-year plants focus on root establishment; full vigor and flowering comes in year two. A deeply rewarding plant for the dedicated native herb grower.

Why Gardeners Love This Plant

Breakbone Fever Herb

Boneset got its name from its historical use for influenza so severe it caused bone pain — known as breakbone fever. Herbalists continue to reach for it during serious flu.

Intensely Bitter

We cannot overstate the bitterness. One mother whose daughter had a severe flu came to us for boneset. The daughter recovered — then told her mother she would rather have the flu than drink that tea again.

Dramatic Native Perennial

Beyond its medicinal value, boneset is a beautiful garden plant — 5 feet tall with large showy white blooms that attract native pollinators.

Returns Year After Year

As a perennial, boneset comes back reliably each year and grows larger over time.

Growing Tips & Common Questions

Everything you need to help your plant settle in and thrive.

Extraordinarily bitter. One of the most bitter herbs we grow. Many herbalists use it in tincture form to avoid the tea experience.

Boneset is specifically for serious influenza — the kind where your bones ache and you feel genuinely terrible. It is not a casual everyday herb.

The aerial parts — leaves and flowers — harvested when the plant is in bloom. Dry and use for tea or tincture. The tincture is often preferred given the extraordinary bitterness of the tea.

Boneset looks unimpressive when young — a small plant that does not hint at the 5-foot specimen it will become. Plant in moist, average to rich soil in sun to part shade and give it time.
