Betony (Stachys betonica, syn. Betonica officinalis) is one of the great overlooked herbs of the European tradition - a low-growing perennial with attractive whorled spikes of rosy-purple flowers rising above a basal rosette of wrinkled, softly hairy leaves. The plant has a quiet, unassuming presence that belies its remarkable history: betony was considered one of the most important medicinal plants in medieval Europe, attributed with an extraordinary range of uses and even magical protective properties. It deserves far more attention than it currently receives.
Growing Information
Betony thrives in partial shade to full sun and well-drained, moderately fertile soil. It is native to European woodland edges and meadows and tolerates a range of conditions, including dry shade where many herbs struggle. Plants reach 12-24 inches tall in flower. A long-lived, slowly spreading perennial that forms attractive clumps over time. Low maintenance once established - divide clumps every few years to maintain vigor. Hardy throughout most of North America.
Traditional Use
Betony holds one of the most distinguished places in the entire European herbal canon. The Roman physician Antonius Musa wrote an entire treatise devoted to it, listing dozens of applications. It was grown in virtually every monastery garden in medieval Europe and appears in the Anglo-Saxon leechbooks as one of the most important protective and medicinal herbs. The saying "sell your coat and buy betony" reflects its historical standing. Herbalists have traditionally valued the aerial parts, harvested at peak flowering. Contemporary herbalists are rediscovering betony as a nervine herb with a rich history.
Care on Arrival
Water upon arrival and settle in a partially shaded location - betony appreciates some protection from intense afternoon sun. Transplant after your last frost date into well-drained soil. It is more tolerant of shade and dry conditions than most medicinal herbs, making it useful for spots where others struggle. Water during establishment, then reduce frequency. A low-maintenance, long-lived plant that rewards patience with increasingly beautiful clumps over the years.

Betony pairs beautifully with other herbs of the European folk tradition. Agrimony shares its Anglo-Saxon herbal heritage and woodland edge habitat.
