Astragalus (Astragalus membranaceus) is one of the most significant plants in traditional Chinese medicine - a deep-rooted perennial legume with elegant pinnate leaves, small yellow-white flowers, and a long taproot that is the part valued by herbalists. The plant itself is modest in appearance, reaching 2-4 feet tall with a somewhat open, airy habit. Its importance lies underground, in the slowly developing root that deepens over several years of growth.

Growing Information
Astragalus thrives in full sun and well-drained, sandy or loamy soil. As a legume it fixes nitrogen and actually prefers less fertile conditions - avoid rich, heavily amended soils. Plants reach 2-4 feet tall and develop a substantial taproot over time. Drought-tolerant once established. The root is traditionally harvested in the fall of the plant's third or fourth year. Start from seed or transplant carefully - the taproot does not like disturbance.

Traditional Use
Astragalus root, known as Huang Qi in Traditional Chinese Medicine, is one of the most important and widely used botanicals in the Chinese herbal pharmacopoeia, with documented use spanning over 2,000 years. It holds a foundational place in classical Chinese herbal formulation and has been the subject of extensive contemporary research. Western herbalists have adopted Astragalus as one of the most significant adaptogenic herbs available, valuing the dried root slices in teas, broths, and tinctures.

Care on Arrival
Water gently upon arrival and handle the root system carefully - Astragalus develops a taproot even as a young plant and does not appreciate disturbance. Settle in a sunny spot for a day before transplanting. Plant in well-drained soil after your last frost date, burying only to the same depth it was growing in the pot. Water during establishment, then reduce frequency. This is a long-term investment plant - the root deepens and improves with each passing year.

If you're building a collection of adaptogenic or traditional Chinese herbs, pair Astragalus with Eleuthero and Holy Basil. For a complementary immune-focused herb garden, add Echinacea, Elderberry, and Boneset. Baical Skullcap is another important traditional Chinese medicinal herb worth growing alongside Astragalus.
