Wood betony has been called a "keep it close" herb for centuries, and many gardeners who grow it find themselves understanding why. The plant has a quiet, grounding presence — nothing flashy, but reliably returning each spring with its distinctive spikes of pink-purple flowers and slightly fuzzy leaves.

This hardy perennial thrives in partial shade to full sun and isn't particular about soil, making it an easy keeper in the herb garden. Growing 12-18 inches tall, betony makes a good edging plant or mid-border companion. The flowers bloom in early summer and attract bees without being overwhelming.

Herbalists have traditionally worked with wood betony as a grounding, centering herb, valued for supporting clarity and calm. Medieval herbalists wrote that every person should grow betony in their garden, and monasteries kept it close at hand. In old European tradition, betony was planted near homes for protection — a guardian herb that helped keep household and spirit steady. The aerial parts are harvested when flowering, and many herbalists prefer to work with fresh plant material when possible.
